Linda Sormin

Museum of Fine Arts Boston

We are excited to announce that the work of Linda Sormin will be exhibited in the anticipated upcoming show Hokusai: Inspiration & Influence at the Museum of Fine Arts  BostonThis major exhibition takes a new approach to the familiar work of the versatile master, demonstrating his impact through the centuries and around the globe.⁣

Sormin's participation will include Sketch study (roque wave), exhibited at the artist's solo exibition at United Contemporary in 2022, as well as a site-specific immersive installation that includes sound and video. Her work offers an expansive interpretation of themes present throughout Hokusai’s prints, bridging the two thematic constellations of water and landscape.

Assembling her installations from discarded objects, textural ceramics, and flickering gold leaf, Sormin sees her art on a continuum with that of her Indonesian ancestors. The work’s treatment of the Asian diaspora experience is fragmented and sutured, bringing disparate stories and unexpected images into conversation with one another through creative alignments and misalignments.

Hokusai: Inspiration & Influence opens at the MFA Boston on March 25 and runs until July 16, 2023.
