Overview
Gordon Shadrach, Dis/Mantle at the Spadina House Museum
Welcome to Mrs. Pipkin’s Manor, is inspired by the real Mrs. Pipkin who was the laundress at the Spadina House in Toronto for the Austin family, founders of the Dominion Bank of Canada. Dis/Mantle is an immersive reimagining of the manor, utilizing an Afro-futuristic narrative wherein Mrs. Pipkin is the homeowner and matriarch, and the house is a haven for those who traveled safely to southern Ontario via the Underground Railroad. Inspired by the efforts of Black Abolitionists, this exhibition incorporates portraiture, decorative arts, performance, and sound to bring forth the under-represented history of Black people in Toronto.

This group exhibition has now been extended until May, 2023, and includes soundscapes, ceramics and visual art by Canadian artists from the Afro Caribbean diaspora.

Dis/Mantle is part of the Toronto History Museum's Awakenings program.
