Dionne Simpson is a Toronto-based painter and textile artist of Jamaican descent. Simpson creates voids in large canvases by pulling threads from them to create voids within them as a result of her family history and textile practices. The canvas is further destroyed and embellished by adding various paint pigments and found pigments, such as White Out and hair dye, into the spaces left behind. The canvas represents the underlying fabric of Canadian society, where she embeds fragments of our culture into the window frames.

In 2004, Simpson became the first national winner of the RBC Canadian Painting Competition. Simpson’s work has been acquired by numerous institutions and corporate collections including MacDonald Stewart Art Centre (Guelph), Peel Art Gallery & Archives (Brampton), Agnes Etherington Art Centre (Kingston), RBC Financial Group, CIBC Wood Gundy among others.

United Contemporary acknowledges and pays respect to the past, present, and future Traditional Custodians and Elders of the lands upon which we operate, which is the traditional territory of multiple indigenous nations including the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, the Anishinabewaki ᐊᓂᔑᓈᐯᐗᑭ, the Haudenosaunee and the Huron-Wendat peoples, as well as many diverse First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples from across Turtle Island. We recognize their enduring presence and deep connection to this land, and we are grateful for their ongoing custodianship and care of this territory.
