We are excited to welcome Emma Nishimura to the United Contemporary roster! Based in Toronto, Nishimura's work addresses ideas of memory and loss that are rooted within family stories and inherited narratives. Through her research and art practice over the last decade, Nishimura has focused on the experiences her family and thousands of other Japanese Canadians endured throughout their forced incarceration during the Second World War. Her work explores this history and the reverberations these experiences have had throughout the subsequent generations.
Nishimura's series Generational Echoes was recently acquired by the AGO, and is currently on view alongside Brian Jungen and Niloofar Kasbi. Entitled The Medium is the Message, this exhibition runs until February 3, 2023, and is one of many reasons to visit the AGO this month!
United Contemporary will be presenting a solo exhibition by Nishimura, opening in March, 2023.
