A compact presentation of Emma Nishimura and Mitchell Akiyama's multimedia installation Paradise is currently on view at the Karasawa Gallery at the Nikkei National Museum, Burnaby, BC, as part of the group exhibition DIS – displaced, dispersed, dispossessed.
Emerging from the Past Wrongs, Future Choices research project on the global history of the uprooting, dispossession, and exile of people of Japanese descent during the 1940s, this parallel group exhibition held at the University of Victoria Legacy Art Gallery in downtown Victoria and the Karasawa Gallery at the Nikkei National Museum in Burnaby asks:
How do these histories continue to resonate across generations and borders through contemporary artistic practice?
The Legacy Art Gallery exhibition highlights creative expressions inspired by a PWFC artists-and-scholars residency program (2022 to 2024) at the University of Victoria. The Karasawa Gallery exhibition at the Nikkei National Museum draws from a significant body of Nikkei artistic practice, building upon curatorial relationships developed over more than a decade.
