Artists Emma Nishimura and Mitchell Akiyama will present their collaborative, multimedia installation Paradise at the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre, Toronto, from October 3, 2026 - January 3, 2027.
Combining print, video, and sculpture, Paradise explores intergenerational inheritance, reflecting on the artist's relationship to the legacy of Japanese Canadian internment experienced by their paternal grandparents. Bridging personal narrative and historical context, Paradise examines the forced relocation and incarceration of Japanese Canadians, tracing how this legacy continues to shape memory, displacement, and belonging across generations.
The exhibition opens with Nuit Blanche on October 3rd, featuring at Artist Talk at 7pm, followed by an origami frog workshop at 9pm.
A formal opening reception for the installation will take place on October 25, from 2 - 4 pm.
