Raise is a portrait of Dr. Dori Tunstall, who is the Dean of Design at OCAD, Toronto. In taking this role, Dr. Tunstall was the first Black Dean of Design in the world, and is a leader in the decolonization of design. The title of this piece relates to her position in the community as someone who acts as an agent of change, to raise the awareness of how white supremacy dominates the design industry and impacts the Black community. Dr. Tunstall's goal is to increase the presence of Black people in the design world to counterbalance the inequities. In Raise, her dress is a reference to the late 1800’s and early 1900’s, making her an early scholar in the blooming community at Spadina House. Her interaction with the red lines by pushing and bending them out of the way, is a physical representation of breaking down barriers.
